Frank was born in Raleigh, NC, to Dr. Frank Sherwood and his wife, Amelia, and grew up in downtown Raleigh’s Oakwood neighborhood. He could trace his roots back to the early 1800’s, and his family included several notable figures, including his grandfather Henry Jerome Stockard, a former president of Peace College and Charles Dewey a prominent banker in Raleigh.
Frank graduated from Hugh Morrison High School in 1949. He attended Davidson College on a football scholarship. After being sidelined with a career-ending knee injury, he then attended Pfeiffer College, where he met his wife, Doris Cox of Salisbury, NC. Finally, he transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill, which led to a lifelong love of the University, and especially Tar Heel sports. Frank and Doris settled in Raleigh and started their family. Settling first in the longview gardens area in 1956, then moving to the Oak Park area in 1963 to 1969, a brief two year move to Rocky Mount NC followed by a final 1971 move back to North Hills area of Raleigh. They were blessed with two sons, Frank Jr and Steve, and a daughter, Suzanne.
After college, Frank went to work with North Carolina Rating Bureau (NCRB), marking the start of a long tenure in the insurance industry. He worked at the Andover Companies and ultimately retired from First of Georgia Insurance Groups. In 1970, he founded the Sherwood Martin Realty Company.
Frank’s love for his family was matched by his affection for all four-legged “critters,” especially dogs. Oh, how Frank loved his dogs – he would light up whenever he spoke about the many dogs he had (and knew) throughout his long life. He loved to tell stories and jokes, and to reminisce with his friends and family. Frank had a wonderful sense of humor, and anyone who knew him will miss talking and laughing with him.
Frank is survived by his children: Frank Sherwood, Jr of Portland, OR and his wife, Amy; Steve Sherwood of New Bern, NC, and his special friend, Susan, also of New Bern; and Suzanne Huie and her husband Gardner, of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Julia Huie Wright and her husband, Clay, of Wilmington, NC; Sara Sherwood, of Wendell, NC; and Rachel Sherwood and her husband, Will Gouz of Youngsville, NC. Frank leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Wesley Sherwood, Kensley Wright and Maxton Wright.
He was predeceased by his wife Doris; his sister, Mary Bates Sherwood; and daughter-in-law, Virginia Sherwood.
