George Franklin Knight

George Knight, a man of brilliant intellect, endless curiosity, and a deeply devoted family heart, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, at 12:15 a.m. at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh. He was 92 years old.

Born on May 11, 1934, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, George was the beloved son of George C. Knight and Elizabeth G. Knight. From an early age, George possessed an insatiable hunger for learning. He spent his life challenging his mind daily, diving deep into the complexities of mathematics and statistics. A true tinkerer and forward-thinker, he loved building home computers from scratch—always with the playful, determined goal of trying to outsmart Bill Gates.

When he wasn’t looking at computer screens, George was looking at the stars. As an avid amateur astronomer, he spent countless hours tracing the paths of the constellations, the planets, and the moon, ultimately passing that awe of the universe down to his daughter, teaching her everything she knows today.

George also found great peace on the water. In his younger years, those days were spent laughing and fishing alongside his dear friend, George Bailey. Later in life, his passion shifted to ocean fishing. Ever the patient and protective teacher, he passed these traditions to his daughter as well, gently showing her how to cast, bait a hook, and safely handle each catch.

His home was always filled with a rich tapestry of music. George held a deep appreciation for the grand scales of classical music and operas, the storytelling of old country music, the energy of 1950s rock and roll, and the magic of musicals. It was not uncommon for him to burst into song, belting out a showtune from a musical he had recently watched, bringing joy and music to those he loved.

Above all, George shared a beautiful, enduring marriage of 70 years with his beloved wife, Dolores “Dodie” Elise Knight. He was predeceased by his cherished son, George William Knight (affectionately known as "Bottom"). His legacy of love, curiosity, and warmth lives on in his wife, Dolores; his daughter, Laurelynn (fondly known as "Pooh"); and his son-in-law, James Byrd. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family.

A private family service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh, with entombment to follow at the historic Oakwood Cemetery.

In memory of George’s life and in gratitude for the care he received, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Transitions Life Care.
