Dear Malindzaks:  I am sad to hear of the passing your husband and father.  I was one of his graduate students at Louisiana Tech University.  George was the best academic mentor I ever had, a fun hunting and fishing buddy, and great friend.  When I left grad school, I had four years invested in a PhD with no intermediate MS degree.  Needless to say, I was very discouraged.  George traveled from NC to FL to take me fishing and encourage me to write up my preliminary work for my MS (which I subsequently did).  He was working for NIH at the time and had no reason to invest his time in me except for his concern for his friend and student.  I am aware of another situation where he took one of students fishing, and once getting him in the boat would not come in until his student wrote the first chapter of his thesis.  George fished and the student wrote.  At least I got fish!  It was a very sad day for the academic community when this consummate and caring educator left academia.  I share your sadness in his passing.  I take comfort in wearing his fingerprints on my life.  Similar fingerprints are on members of your family and on countless students he taught.  I know I will cherish mine for the rest of my life.

We are sorry about George's passing.  Whenever I am driving with kids that are going nuts I think about the time Ed told me that George would threaten to throw his shoe in the back of the car when you all were being naughty and it still makes me giggle. George was such a great presence in so many people's lives as apparent in these remembrances and I know he will be missed, but his stories will live on.

There are certain people you meet in life that are just a step above the rest of us. George was such a person. He was admired for his wisdom and thoughtfulness. When George stood up to give his opinion on a topic, we all listened.

Marianne and Family,

I worked with George and played many rounds of golf with him.  He was an extraordinarily accomplished human being; a renaissance man, who excelled in science, teaching, art, boating, athletics, and most importantly as a kind and caring family man.  I always looked up to him with respect.  We will all miss him dearly.

When a great man dies...the light he leaves behind him will shine on the paths of all men.

Marianne, George was a good friend and I shall miss him. I always enjoyed being with him and hearing his ngolf tales.
