George earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His education allowed him to work in the private sector until he returned to NCSU Facilities from November 1995 until he convinced his wife to join him in retirement in August 2018. Upon retirement his coworkers presented him a beautiful State red box with the words “George’s Box of Wisdom.” Included were these words: “Georgeapedia, friendship, guidance, calmness, mentorship, expertise, practical approach, problem solver, teacher, wisdom, stability, friend, knowledge, brain trust, kind, partnership, class act, gentleman, leadership and example.” What more do you need to know about this man? He was, and still is, a man of faith, hope and LOVE!
George was preceded in death by his father, George Irving Smith and mother, Virginia H. Smith. In addition, he was preceded in death by his stepmother’s sister Mollie Baggett.
George is survived by the love of his life, Alice L. Smith. Further surviving relatives: stepmother, Nancy H. Smith, her sister, Virginia Henry, her nephew Chip Baggett, Chip's wife Shannon, their children, and Nancy’s cousin Linda Jackson; George's sister-in-law, Margaret L. Lewis and her husband Tom Lewis; George's Brother-in-law, Otho E. Liles III and his wife Sharee Liles; nieces and nephews: Mike Liles and his fiancé Hayden Lundahl, Bill Liles and his wife Kristin and their children, Erin Meyers and her husband Brad and their children. In addition, Mr. Smith is survived by his never forgotten and fun-loving cousins Butch Hassell and Frank Hassell.
All who knew George are invited to the visitation at St. Paul's Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27612 on Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 11:30am to 12:30pm, where the family will greet you in the Church Fellowship Hall. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place in the Church Sanctuary at 1:00pm. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, with gratitude, that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul’s Christian Church at 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh NC 27612 (stpauls.net/give) or to Transitions LifeCare, Philanthropy Dept., 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 (transitionslifecare.org/donate).
Services have been placed in the care of Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh.
