Born in Wilson County, NC, he was the son of the late Harvey and Velma Bass. He was preceded in death by brothers Mike and Royce; sisters Joyce Bass and Beverly Hardison.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann Hodnett Bass; daughters Alisa Bass Heverly (Kenneth) of Wilmington; Marianna Wynn Bass of Raleigh; grandchildren Elizabeth Lane Heverly Guthrie, Kenneth Alan Heverly, Jr, and Mary Ellis Fanney; two great-grandchildren, Talan Lane Guthrie, and Parker Heverly Guthrie; sister Sharon Beth Edwards of Havelock; brother Verlon Bass of New Bern; godson Samuel Lane Barrow of Raleigh.
Gerald graduated from New Bern High School, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the UNC School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1962. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Gerald retired following a distinguished 50 year career practicing law. He was a veteran of the US Army.
Gerald loved his family, church, golf, and the Tar Heels.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 23 at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh 27603. Friends and family will be received following the service in the Garden Gallery at the church.
