

Hinton Matthew Denning, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, November 24, 2018 at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. Born on January 16, 1931 in Fuquay-Varina; he was the son of the late Matthew Milton Denning and Okle Jackson Denning. When Matt was around 9 years old, the family moved into Cary. He graduated from Cary High School and served honorably in the Korean Conflict with the US Navy.
Matt was an owner/operator with Grocery Boy Jr. and a meat cutter at both Food Lion and Sam’s Club. Working all of his life, he reluctantly retired only last year at the age of 86 from his own business - Professional Knife Sharpening. He greeted everyone with a smile and thoroughly enjoyed meeting with all of his clients over the years.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years: Jacqueline Mills Denning; by his children: Ken Denning, of Ocoee, FL and Nancy (Ken) MacLean, of Bend, OR; by his step-children: Michael McLean, of Princeton, WVa. and Leann Fulghum, of Roxboro, NC; by his seven grandchildren: Jeff Denning, Stephen (Dylan) Denning, Stephanie (Brendon) Swain, Natalie (Matt) Gerhardt, Laurie (Chris) Dunkle, Brian Denning and Ryan Fulghum; and by seven great-grandchildren: Jackson, Rosie, Layla, Makenna, Nolan, Luke and Carly; and by his sister: Bobbie (Ted) McCullen, of Raleigh, NC.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, by his son: Matt Denning and by his brother: Joseph Denning.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 28th at Mitchell Funeral Home from 1-2 pm. A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Craig Gaither, will be held at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel, concluding with Military Honors. Placement of the urn will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transitions LifeCare – 200 Hospice Circle – Raleigh, NC 27607 or to any local animal rescue/shelter. Matt had a special place in his heart for his furry friends, many rescued dogs and the birds and squirrels in his yard.
