Hal Venable Worth III

He grew up in Raleigh. He attended Woodberry Forest School where he graduated in 1958. He then attended UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. After graduation he served two years as a Naval Supply Officer, having received a commission through the Naval ROTC program at UNC. Hal then worked with York Properties for 56 years. He first served as J.W. "Willie" York's right-hand man and later as Chief Investment Officer. He combined a strong work ethic with great knowledge of mathematics and accounting. He was an outstanding negotiator and participated extensively in the company's growth and success.

In addition to his work and family, his first love was the North Carolina Tar Heels. Having graduated in 1962, he followed the Tar Heels every step of the way. To say he was an ardent fan would be an understatement. Hal also loved golf and trips to Atlantic Beach.

He was an excellent golfer having won the Carolina Country Club championship on three occasions. At the Morehead City Country Club, he would arrange the pairings for his friends and keep meticulous records of the results. In effect, he was the commissioner. His love of golf was accentuated by his annual pilgrimage to the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. This annual event was a major highlight in his life where in addition to watching golf he would gather with friends for dinner.

He was an active citizen in the community in many capacities. He was past chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs. He was chairman of the Raleigh Board of Realtors and the first chairman of the Raleigh Board's Commercial Division. He was a past chairman of the Raleigh Housing authority. He attended Saint Michael's Episcopal Church where he served in many leadership positions.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Hal Venable Woth, Jr. and Mary Simmons Andrews Worth; and stepson, Jason Laughinghouse.

In addition to his wife Lynne of over 40 years, he is survived by his son, Hal Venable Worth IV (Lee); his daughter, Kelly Worth Mitchell (Michael); five granddaughters, Catherine, Sarah Scott, Hallie, Wynn and Molly; three great-grandchildren; and his two sisters, Julia Worth Ray and Holladay Worth Sanderson.

A memorial service be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Parish Hall.
