He was born in Raleigh on September 26, 1926, the youngest son of the late Charles Earl Johnson and Nancy White Johnson.
Harvey grew up at 120 Hillsboro Street in the shadow of the State Capitol. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Raleigh and then, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950 where he was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. He volunteered for the Navy in 1944 and served until the end of World War II.
He was president of the Hamlet Ice Company, co-owner of Charles E. Johnson and Sons Insurance Agency and later served as a senior executive at Moore and Johnson Insurance Agency.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Katharine (Trina) Blake Johnson; his children, Trina Blanton and husband Tom, Anna Smith and husband Steve, and Jane Brady and husband Dan; his grandchildren, Bess Smith Pitt (John), Kate Blanton Martin (Scott), Anna Miles Smith Garrett (Grayson), Stevie Smith (Allison), Frances Blanton Finch (Carlton), and Trina Brady Hooker (Cahill) and his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Culbreath Pitt, Harvey Hayes Pitt, Franklin McKinley Martin, Anna Smith Garrett, Richard Grayson Garrett III, and Wilson Hugh Finch.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles Earl Johnson, Jr (2007), Bradford White Johnson (2016) and Richard Mitchell Johnson (2002).
Harvey was past president of The United Way, The Raleigh Little Theater, The Carolina Country Club, The Sphinx Club and The Terpsichorean Club. He was an avid golfer, loved to fly fish at Milburnie Fishing Club, loved to travel and in his later years loved to paint watercolors. But his true love was his wife, Trina, and his family.

A private burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church on Monday, November 12, at 2:00pm. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church parish hall.
