Hayne Palmour III, 91, of Raleigh died peacefully Thursday, January 19, 2017. He was born February 27, 1925 in Gainesville, GA; son of the late Hayne Palmour, Jr and Lilly Simmons Palmour. He is also preceded in death by his sister Shirley Palmour Harriman.
Hayne served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and then obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Ceramic Engineering in 1948 and 1950, respectively, from Georgia Tech. Hayne then spent the next 34 years as a faculty member in what became the Materials Science and Engineering Department at NCSU. During those years, Hayne was active as a researcher, educator, advisor, administrator, and as a Faculty Senator. In 1999, he was inducted into the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Engineering Hall of Fame, and in 2015 he was inducted into NCSU’s Materials Science and Engineering Alumni Hall of Fame.
Hayne was a devoted husband and father, and loved being with his family from near and far. He led his family on many camping adventures, and loved fishing, sailing, and spending time outdoors. He was a lover of music and a lifelong church choir member at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church. He was also an outstanding and inventive cook, and cooking remained a passion all of his life. Most of all, Hayne was not only a father to his children and grandchildren, but a father figure and mentor to many, many more, both in his personal and professional life. He had a unique ability to talk to anyone and always showed interest and care in the lives of others. He provided guidance and counsel, and always gave everyone encouragement by believing in, and showing them, their potential. He had a positive impact on the lives of all those that knew him.
