Dick was born in Shelby, NC to the late Holland Phifer Dixon, Sr. and Ruby Ellen Ware Dixon. He was educated in Cleveland County Schools and attended NCSU in Raleigh. He spent 2 years in the US Army, mostly in Germany.
Dick settled in Raleigh where he worked a number of years in real estate sales and property development with O’Neal Realty and Builders and later with Howard, Perry and Walston Better Homes and Gardens. He earned his NC Contractors License on his path to opening Dixico, his home inspections company.
He was an ardent Wolf Pack fan all his life and was thrilled that his cousin Tommy Burleson played basketball dressed in the NCSU red and white uniforms.
Dick proudly served many positions and held a number of offices in the Raleigh Civitan Club in his approximately 30 years of service. He was named Civitan Of the Year in 1996, President from 2014 to 2015, served on the board of directors for many years and has been Sargent-at-arms for nearly 20 years.
Not everyone is lucky enough in life to find a wonderful cause in which to be passionately involved. For Dick it was the Raleigh Civitan Club that captured his heart and allowed him to eventually take part in celebrating the NC Special Olympics medal winners. He reportedly joyfully worked in the NC Summer sun and heat to have precise, loving and proper awards ceremonies for medal winners. He was said to help from erecting stages to presenting awards to breaking it all down at the end of the event at an age that could have given him an excuse to just stand by and watch. His fellow volunteers were pleased and impressed with his dedication to the Special Olympians.
He is survived by a son, John Butler Dixon of Norwood, NC and a step-daughter, Emily Dianne Bass of Indalantic, Florida, and his sister Doris Dixon Wolf of Charlotte, NC.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, January 22, 2024 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, Raleigh, NC.
