Howard Lower Hinderer Jr.

Howard was born on June 13, 1936, in Akron, Ohio to the late Howard L. Hinderer, Sr. and Ruth Cooper Hinderer. Following the end of World War II, his parents moved him and his sister, Jane, to Tuscaloosa, Alabama so his father could help open a new tire plant for B.F. Goodrich. Howard graduated from Tuscaloosa high school in 1954 and went on to attend the University of Alabama where he graduated with honors with a degree in Chemistry. He worked in the rubber and tire industry for nearly 50 years until his retirement in 2009, living in 5 states but settling first in Bellefontaine, Ohio and then in Oneida, Tennessee, for most of the last 40 years of his life. He was a long-time member of the Lions Club chapter in Oneida, including twice serving as the chapter president.

Howard was a lifelong learner and student of science and engineering that changed so much during his lifetime. He had over 500 books on everything from Quantum mechanics to the history of civilization and nutrition. He stressed the importance of learning upon his only child and son, James, even tutoring him through a tough organic chemistry course he took in college. Howard cared deeply for his family and was married twice in his life. He married Carolyn Lee Hinderer in 1979 until her passing in 1998. Then in 2004, Howard married June Garrett Hinderer and they lived in Robbins, TN together until her passing in late 2023. In 2024, his son moved him to Chapel Hill, NC to be closer to family, including his two young grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his sister, Jane Anderson, of Fort Wayne, Indiana and his son, James Howard Hinderer (Jennifer Oliver) and two grandchildren of Durham, North Carolina.

Howard played the tuba in the high school band and enjoyed classical music. He also loved bird watching, Oldsmobile cars, walking an endless number of miles, discussing politics, describing different rubber tire compounds, physical maps, taking back roads to look at large industrial plants and watching baseball. He was a great friend and mentor and will be missed with a legacy long remembered.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on August 28, 2026at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd, Raleigh, North Carolina 27608. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

Interment will be held at Carson cemetery in Oneida, TN in the Fall.
