Born in South Boston, Virginia, Allen was the son of the late Hugh Allen Goodman, Sr. and Lelia McDaniel Goodman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Conway Allen Goodman. Allen graduated from Ferrum Junior College, and then earned a degree in political science from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 where he was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. He then enjoyed a long, successful career selling college and medical textbooks on the road – providing his family with many fun opportunities to travel together and create lasting memories.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Goodman; his son, Russell Moncure (Missy); his daughter, Leigh Allen Gipple (Marc); his grandchildren, Will, Ally, Lawson, and Carson; his great-granddaughter, Isla; his sisters, Bee Spencer and Dee Childress; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Allen never met a stranger and was known for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and great sense of humor. He enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing, boating, NASCAR, NC State and VCU sports, and loved classic rock – especially the Rolling Stones and Elvis. More than anything, Allen cherished spending time with his family and cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. His warm smile, unmistakable blue eyes, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. His memory lives on in the family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home with a reception to follow (details forthcoming).
