

Irene was born July 15, 1924 in Marks Creek, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Mathew R. Boykin and Pearl Bissette Boykin.
Irene was married to the late Vernon “Red” Hewitt from 1947 to 1980 who was employed with Southern Bell Telephone Company.
Irene is survived by her daughter Kathryn Vaught and her son-in-law Michael Vaught. Other family members include nieces and nephews Alan Compton, Carol Ann Boykin Bratton, Earl Boykin and, Mary Lou Boykin Harrison along with many other great nieces and nephews.
Irene and Red joined St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in 1956 and she loved the days she and Red worshiped and rejoiced there. Later they were members of Asbury United Methodist Church and in her later years Irene worshiped with friends at their churches. Irene was also a member of Edith Chapter 160 of the Eastern Star.
Irene was truly blessed with a large group of friends who were an important part of the support, love and joy in her life. She was a wonderful loving Wife; Mother; Friend, Cook Extraordinar; Seamstress and Homemaker who loved to sing, dance and bowl blind.
Irene endured 30 years of her life with macular degeneration and she benefited from the programs for the blind sponsored by the North Carolina Lions Club, especially summers with her many VIP (Visually Impaired People) friends at Camp Dogwood.
