Jack Franklin Moore, beloved husband, father and friend to many, died peacefully at the Oaks at Mayview on Monday, April 24, 2017 in his 97th year. Born near Lexington, NC on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1919, he was the 3rd son of Jesse Edmund Moore and Pearl Ann Berryhill Moore of Anson and Mecklenburg Counties. He graduated from Technical High School in Charlotte in 1936. He studied at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD before moving to Raleigh to attend NC State College. While there he was President of his freshman class and served as President of Sigma Chi fraternity where he met the love of his life, Zua Bright Hockaday at a fraternity dance. They married in April, 1944. Soon after the wedding, he was stationed with the Navy in the Philippines. At the end of the war, he completed his studies in Mechanical Engineering and graduated from NC State College in 1947.
He was among the first engineers hired by IBM in the Raleigh office and retired with them 27 years later. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, led the Boy Scout troop, taught Royal Ambassadors – just to name a few. He also was a member of the Optimist Club for many years.
As a devoted father of 3 children, he loved his family and taught them values to carry them through life. He and his wife of 69 years raised them in a loving environment where they understood the value of education, church, and an appreciation for the value of all people. He inspired in them a curiosity about life and encouraged and enabled them to continue their studies both in the United States and abroad.
He was devoted, kind, generous, clever, humorous and provided for his family and others to the end of his life. A voracious reader, he appreciated books on history, philosophy and religion. He had a keen appreciation for classical music. A dedicated sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching almost any sport he could find on TV.
He moved to The Oaks at Whitaker Glen in 2012. The family wishes to thank all of the dedicated staff at Whitaker Glen for the exceptional loving care and attention they provided. Their dedicated acts will never be forgotten. The family also thanks The Oaks at Mayview and Transitions Life Care for their care in his final days.
