Jackie graduated from Wake Forest University in 1951 with a Bachelor’s Degree cum laude in Mathematics. She later earned her Master of Education from NC State University in 1979.
Jackie’s life was one of service, in both her professional and personal life. In addition to raising four wonderful children, she also taught mathematics at Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC for 25 years and later served as the first female head in the Math Department. Teaching awards include the Certificate of Recognition from the NC State University branch of Sigma Xi for research for her dedication of teaching, The Richard M. Jewell Award in 1988, State Nominee for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching in 1988 and 1989 from the Mathematics Division of the NC Department of Public Instruction, and W.W. Ranking Memorial Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education from the NC Council of Teachers in Mathematics in 1997. As a woman of tremendous faith, Jackie served as instructor of the Fidelis Class and as a Deacon at Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh where she was a devoted member for over 40 years. Jackie was also an active member of the Woman’s Club of Raleigh providing service as a docent at the Governor's Mansion.
Jackie’s greatest joy was being with her family – the more members present the better! Whether it was over home-cooked vegetable dinners in the summer, celebrating the holidays, or on a family vacation, you could always find her smiling at watching her family enjoy one another’s company. A place that was special to Jackie was Kerr Lake and the cottage that her husband, Walter, built. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends would join her family for time spent boating, skiing, swimming, and fishing on the lake. Meals were shared with family and neighbors and memories made that she cherished her whole life. She frequently took her children, and later her grandchildren, on trips to historical sites and enjoyed sharing historical facts with them. Jackie enjoyed playing bridge with friends and continued doing so at Abbotswood at Stonehenge. She especially enjoyed college basketball games when UNC Chapel Hill or Wake Forest were playing.
She is survived by her children, Cathryn Nutt Harvey, Harvey Nutt (Kathy), and Dean Nutt (Vickie Basham); three grandchildren, Ashley Edwards (Danielle McClennan), Robin Clements (Daniel), and Walter Nutt, III, (Krystal Lubitz); two great-grandsons Dominic and Hunter Lubitz, one great-granddaughter Abigail Clements, and many other loved ones.
Her parents, Roy and Lelia Beard; her husband, Walter Nutt; her son Walter Nutt, II; and her brother Roy Beard preceded Jackie in death.
