

James was born in Birmingham, AL, in 1937 to James Aubrey George and Dollie LouVera (Guthrie) George. He grew up near Birmingham, attending Bush Elementary School and Ensley High School. After high school, he served in the military where he earned a B.S. in Healthcare Administration from George Washington University and a Master of Science from the University of Southern California.
James enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and completed 30 years of military service, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Service Corps. His active-duty career included assignments at numerous naval hospitals and medical clinics throughout the U.S. and abroad; deployments aboard the USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) and USS Windham County (LST-1170); and service in the Republic of South Vietnam.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he became a resident of Raleigh, NC, and continued to work for several healthcare organizations in various parts of the state.
While serving his first of two tours in Japan, James met his beloved wife, to whom he was married for 65 years. He loved living in Japan, teaching English to local students, and developing a lifelong passion for Japanese culture and art.
James was a quiet, kind-hearted and gentle soul, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed. Survivors include his wife, Kyoko; daughter, Karen; son, Michael (Teresa); grandchildren, Emily, Joshua, Gabriel, and Macy; and sister, Jerry Cunningham (Fran).
A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
