James Robert Goode Jr.

James Robert Goode Jr., affectionately known as “Butch” and “Sarge,” a cherished father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, under the compassionate care of the hospice team at the Durham VA Medical Center.

Born on July 18, 1941, in New Jersey, James was the beloved son of the late James Robert Goode Sr. and Evelyn W. Goode. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Hannelore Goode; and his brother, Aaron Thomas Goode, fondly known as “Shorty.”

James spent his formative years in Youngsville, North Carolina, and attended Gethsemane High School in Bunn, North Carolina.

In 1967, James answered the call to serve his country and joined the United States Army. During his 14-year military career, he served with distinction in the 9th Infantry and Artillery Divisions as a sharpshooter. He completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, where he received the Purple Heart. His military service also took him to Germany, where he met and married the love of his life, Hannelore. Together, they built a family and raised two wonderful children, instilling in them the values of love and perseverance.

Following Brother James’s honorable discharge from the Army in 1981, he transitioned to civilian life. He briefly worked at Rural Plumbing Company. Afterwards, he began a successful career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he operated and transported heavy equipment until his retirement. James also worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken, demonstrating strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family that characterized his entire life.

James’s life was a testament to service and dedication—not only to his country, but also to his family, church, and community. He was a 5th-degree Mason and an active member of Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. His faith was an important part of his life. A man who appreciated life’s simple pleasures, James found great joy in cooking and fishing. His culinary skills were well known among family and friends, while fishing provided him with moments of peace, reflection, and relaxation. Above all, James was a devoted family man and a faithful provider. As a young man, he helped support his younger siblings, and that same spirit of responsibility and care continued as he built and provided for his own family. His grandchildren were among the greatest joys of his life. He treasured the time he spent caring for, teaching, guiding, and simply being present with them. James leaves a legacy of love, service, resilience, and commitment.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, James Robert Goode III of Raleigh, NC, and his daughter, Evelyn Ann Goode (Ronald Middleton) of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren: Demetrius Goode, Makayah Parker, Victoria Burns, Sammee Burns; Tayshaun Whitner, Darius Whitner, Jeremiah Middleton, Javon Middleton, Josiah Middleton; four siblings: Wallace E. Goode (Gwendolyn), Geneva Marie Woods, Miles Douglas Goode, and Ronald Lee Goode; and extended family members and friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.

A Graveside Service will take place at 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612.
