Jim was a very pleasant man and neighbor.  He talked often of his home in Blowing Rock.  He always had a smile on his face.  He will be missed by many.

I met Jim when I joined the Blowing Rock Garden Club. He was one of our few male members, and I so enjoyed his company! He loved our "field trips" as did we all. Such a fine person. I will miss seeing him!

Martha,
You likely do not remember me from 70 years ago, but think of a skinny little kid, Max Miller with a twin sister, Leah. We lived around the corner from you on Creston Road.  I remember you as a pretty teenager when James and I were just grammar school kids.  James and I have kept in constant contact all these years although we last saw each other at a Ravenscroft reunion in 1995. When my family moved away from Raleigh in 1947, I several times took a bus back to Raleigh to visit him, and he also came to Greensboro. Although I left North Carolina in 1955 to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy and never lived there again, James and I saw each other on my visits home. He was thoughtful enough to drop by to see my parents when he was working in Greensboro.
James was a loyal friend, whom I will sincerely miss. We have had many phone conversations in the past two decades, and he was consistent in his very intelligent and straight forward manner.  His health in the past few years was of concern to me so I was only moderately surprised when Frank Bynum notified me of James' passing. We are never really prepared for such a loss. I found a picture of James at our birthday party circa 1941 which I will send you.

Martha, Hope you remember me. Unfortunately I did not learn of Jim's passing until today. Jim and I shared many visits together to my place at Scaly NC and to Blowing Rock, as well as many times to Emerald Isle. And one cross country train trip to Vancouver, and back across Canadian Rockies which he thoroughly enjoyed.
I always admired the way Jim cared for your father in last years of his life. I wil miss Jim, I know you did not know me very well, but please accept my synpathy for you and your family.   Dick Umstead

Martha-Please accept my condolences on your brother's passing. Jim was a fine man and a good son so I imagine he was also a good brother. I first met Jim in his role with the insurance department auditing the company where I worked in Durham. Discovering we both were Duke grads and avid sports fans we continued our friendship at football and basketball games. He was always making sure your dad got to the games and was comfortable. For the last several years our contact was limited to infrequent visits at Rex Wellness when he was in Raleigh in the winter. I had missed seeing him this winter and now know why he wasn't there.

We'll never forget Jim walking from his house to ours across the back yard to say hello and visit with us.  His deviled eggs at neighborhood parties are legendary. We loved his love of all things Duke and his loyalty to his friends, his shy little smile - he was a good neighbor and friend.  We'll miss him.
