Jay Narron Foster

Jay Narron Foster, age 93, passed away at home in Raleigh on March 12, 2015. Jay was born August 11, 1921 to Jesse Etheridge and Ophelia Narron in Johnston County, NC. She grew up on their tobacco farm with her sister, Mazie and brother, Billy. After finishing high school Jay moved to Chapel Hill and joined her uncle’s wholesale business, attended classes at UNC and worked at the Carolina Inn. There she met her future husband Bill. When Bill left Chapel Hill to continue his medical studies she trained as a surgical technician and worked as a nurse in a private hospital in Williamston, NC in order to learn more about the medical profession. After they married and eventually moved to Roanoke, VA, she became her husband’s bookkeeper for his medical family practice and raised their two children William and Annette. Jay was very active as a longstanding member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke and was elected as the first of two women deacons in 1974. After Bill passed she moved to Raleigh in 1993 to be with her children and grandchildren. She joined Asbury United Methodist Church and fully participated in their senior program. More recently she became a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church.

She will be remembered for her strength, intelligence, and wonderful sense of humor. She loved her senior activities, participating in her investment club, and gardening in her yard.

She is survived by her children Annette Foster and William (Bill) Foster MD, daughter-in-law Sharon Foster MD, grandsons Mark, David and Scott Foster, brother, Bill Narron from Wilmington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 16th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 17th at 11:00am at the Mausoleum Chapel at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. Entombment will follow the service.
