Jean Locke McCormick

Jean McCormick, of Melbourne, Fla., died Thursday, April 12, 2018 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Mrs. McCormick was in Raleigh, N.C., to see the beautiful dogwoods and azaleas and to visit with family at the time of her passing. During her final days, she was surrounded and celebrated by all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and sister-in-law.

Mrs. McCormick was born in Atlanta, Ga., and attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

In 1965, she and her husband moved to Miami to raise their children. There, she was one of the founders of Kendall Youth Athletic Association, a cheerleading coach and competition judge. She served as a Khoury League officer and on the PTA board. She belonged to the Pan American Pilots’ Wives club.

She moved to Suntree (Melbourne), Fla., in 1991. She was a member of the Melbourne Panhellenic Alumni Association and the Bookers (book club), board member of the Melbourne Welcome Wagon Club, and member of the Melbourne Women’s Club, Neighbors of Suntree and Suntree Country Club. She attended Suntree Methodist Church.

Mrs. McCormick is predeceased by her husband of 46 years and love of her life, James H. (Jim) McCormick Jr., and her brother Thomas MacDonald. She is survived by children James H. (Bo) McCormick III (Sally) of Raleigh, N.C., Kerry M. Hicks (Dave) of Melbourne, Fla., and Matthew L. McCormick (Heather) of Watkinsville, Ga; grandchildren Sarah Ann Walters (Jeremy), James McCormick IV, Cameron McCormick, Mack Crawford, Chris Crawford, Austin Crawford, Kathryn Crawford, Shane McCormick and Wade McCormick; great-granddaughter Sadie Lee Walters; sister-in-law Sherry MacDonald; and niece Skye MacDonald.

A celebration of Mrs. McCormick’s life will be held Saturday, June 16 at 11 a.m. at Suntree Methodist Church in Melbourne, Fla. Visitation and reception following at the home of Kerry and Dave Hicks.

Memorial donations may be made to Promise, which will provide safe, affordable housing and a fulfilling life style for adults with special needs in Melbourne. (Promise in Brevard, PO Box 120028, West Melbourne, FL 32912-0028)

The family would like to thank Tarun Tewatia, M.D. in Melbourne for his excellent long-term care and Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh for the support they gave during Mrs. McCormick’s final days.
