Jerry L. Austin

May 15, 1932June 4, 2011

Jerry L. Austin, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 4, 2011 after a courageous struggle with cancer. A native of Fremont, Michigan, Jerry was born on May 15, 1932, and was the only son of the late John and Hattie Austin. His father, John, was a painting contractor and his mother a nurse for many years. One of John’s most respected clients was the Gerber family of Gerber Baby Foods whose corporate offices reside in Fremont. Jerry’s parents were members of First Christian Reformed Church which was comprised mainly of people who had settled in Fremont from Holland, Netherlands.

Jerry attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where he met his wife, Joann. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Michigan State University and a Masters in Business from Pace University in New York. Jerry was employed with General Telephone and Electronics (GTE) for over 30 years, followed by a season of time working with The Bruce Knott Group of financial advisors in Durham, NC.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joann Vroom Austin; their 3 children: Jeff Austin and his wife Cathy of Columbia, SC, Judi Woodward and her husband Gene of Las Vegas, NV, and Jonathan Austin and his wife Susan of Madison, NC. They have 11 delightful grandchildren.

The family will be receiving friends at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh on Friday evening, June 10th, from 7:00-9:00pm. A funeral service is planned for Saturday morning, June 11th, at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to Providence Baptist Church at 6339 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612, where Jerry and Joann had been long time members.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Rosewood Health Center at The Cypress, as well as the Hospice of Wake County for their kind and dedicated care given to Jerry during this time.

Condolences and memories can be shared at Arrangements under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.

Please take a moment and sign the guestbook or leave a message for the family, on the right....

Jerry was a great Christian friend who easily talked about his faith in Christ. His sense of humor lifted our spirits and made us eager to spend time with him. We have many fond memories from our 50+ years of friendship with Jerry and JoAnn.
JoAnn and family, may God surround you with His comfort.

Hi Joann and family: John and I were honored to friend you through my Mama, who cleaned for you for many years. We also appreciated your presence at our wedding in 2006 and the lovely gift you gave us. John was happy to have Jerry's guidance when he did that work for the house you were selling a year or so ago. We will miss his presence and hope that you know he is still with you no matter where you are. He was a wonderful man and we were happy to know him. Thinking of all of you and sharing your grief and memories...
Love, John and Jeanette Matthews

I met Jerry on the counting team at church and so enjoyed serving with him. Sounded like he had a wonderful family and such a nice life from the stories he shared with the team. Such a friendly man, I was pleased to have met. God bless those he leaves behind to cherish the memories and love.

We have only met Jerry on one occasion. We have been blessed to call his son a dear friend. Having witnessed the way Jeff leads his life, we know that Jerry is proud of his legacy and can be at peace in heaven knowing his job here on earth was well done.

Jerry was steadfast in his love of Christ, family, and friends. It was a privilege to be associated with him in two careers. A consumate gentleman, always sacrificing his needs to assist others in theirs. He clearly walked the road less travelled. Jerry will be missed, but not forgotten.
