Jerry Ramey, 73, passed away November 15, 2018 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina after a prolonged courageous battle fighting idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. A loving husband, father and friend, the world was fortunate to have him and he will be sorely missed. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 20th at 3PM at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park (7209 Glenwood Avenue).
Jerry was born in January 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland to Beatrice and Harry Ramey. His love of music translated into an early career as a rocking saxophone club performer while still in his teens. He attended the University of Maryland and was drafted into the Air Force. While in the military, his mathematical ability led him to become a statistician in the Department of Defense. He continued at the Pentagon where he served for 42 years until his retirement. While attending a Pentagon holiday party, he met and fell in love with Mirtha, and they were married a year later. On November 25, 2018, they would have celebrated 46 years of marriage. His care for his three children knew no bounds: coaching soccer and swim teams, tutoring them in math, ensuring a yearly family vacation to exciting parts unknown, and sharing his love of music.
He was a man of technical and mathematical intellect as well as a creative force. His love and kindness was felt by those who knew him for only minutes. He radiated "being happy and content in the now".
Jerry is survived by his wife Mirtha and their three children: John, Brian, and Kristi. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Rachel, Olivia, Jacob, and Abby.
