Jimmy Lee DeBerry, 74, passed away on March 16, 2018. He was born in Raleigh, NC on September 10, 1943 to William and Helen DeBerry, who preceded him in death. Jimmy was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from JC Penney's in 2002.
A man of simple tastes, Jimmy loved watching sports, particularly basketball and baseball. He enjoyed collecting sports cards and coins, keeping meticulous records of his collections. Jimmy loved animals, adopting several stray dogs over the years. Sitting on his front porch and feeding the squirrels was a favorite past time.
Jimmy is survived by his four brothers: Jackie DeBerry and wife Lorena; Don DeBerry and wife Julia; Delbert DeBerry and wife Patty; and Ricky DeBerry, all of Raleigh; by his little sister: Lillie DeBerry Anderson and husband David, of Tarboro; and by 11 nieces and nephews and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to give heartfelt appreciation to the third floor staff at Sunrise of Raleigh for the love and care they gave to Jimmy the past eleven months. They would also like to thank the nurses and aides at Transitions LifeCare for the compassion they showed Jimmy and his family during the end of life journey.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 2-3 pm at the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Avenue). Funeral Services, officiated by his great-nephew, Zachary Campbell, will be held at 3 pm in the chapel. Military Honors will conclude the service.
