

She grew up in Indiana, graduated from West Lafayette High School, received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, M.S. from Penn State University and Ed. D from University of Louisiana, Monroe. Her teaching career included elementary schools in Indiana, N. Jersey, Wisconsin, Missouri and Louisiana, followed by college teaching at Midland Lutheran College, NE, before moving to North Carolina where she taught at Campbell, Shaw and North Carolina Central Universities.
In retirement Joan volunteered at the N.C. Museum of Art at the information desk and as a docent and as a tutor for Communities in Schools. Her interest in social justice issues led her to membership and leadership roles in the League of Women Voters, Church Women United, United Methodist Women and American Association of University Women. Leisure activities included gardening and travel.
She was predeceased by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. R. W. Samson, her brother Dale Samson, husband David E. Robertson, PHD, and Richard G. Pearson, PhD. Also step-sons Douglas and Roger Pearson. Joan is survived by her brother Fred Samson, daughter Gail Brookman (Steve), son Jay Robertson (Birdie), step-daughter Jeanne Silvey and Valerie Perry (Leo) and a blended family of eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held in Oklahoma City, Ok at a later date.
