Joe Calvin Long, 87, died peacefully at WakeMed on, Thursday, October 11, 2018. Joe was born September 16, 1931 in Mebane, NC to the late John Esley Long and Lessie Jordan Long. He graduated from Mebane High School in 1949 and entered State College in Raleigh. After his first year at State, the Korean War had begun and he volunteered for service in the US Marine Corps in June, 1950. He served stations at Camp Pendleton, CA, Korea and Miami, FL, until 1954. Joe again entered NC State University and graduated May, 1958.
Joe worked as a salesman and especially enjoyed his many years with Miller Manufacturing Company of Richmond, VA. He was married to Doyle Jernigan for 60 years, who survives him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Coleen L. Compton, Kathleen C. Long, Lydia L. Oakley and brother, Paul W. Long.
In addition to his wife Doyle, he is survived by his children, son, David E. Long (Anna) of New Jersey and their son, C. Daniel Long; daughter, “Peggy” Leigh B. Davis and her children, Jordan A. Beverley and , Tyler Keith Davis; one great-grandson,“Trey” Timothy Scott Holleman lll; as well as many nieces and nephews.
After retirement Joe enjoyed golf and traveling.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Burial will be private at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare or White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
