John Thomas Cox, age 80, of Cary, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, September 24, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on October 21, 1944, in Columbus County, NC, to Alpheus and Eunice Cox.
John graduated from North Carolina State University in 1966 with a degree in Civil Engineering and built notable structures across the Southeast. His significant projects include the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia; a large addition to the Football Stadium at the University of South Carolina in Columbia; a major expansion of the Fayetteville Regional Hospital; and the Shearon Harris Dam, which supplies cooling water to the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. However, the building he was most proud of was the home he constructed for his family in Cary, NC, in 1980.
After retiring from Civil Engineering in 1995, John sold commercial and residential real estate across North Carolina through his company, Cox Property Group. A devout Christian, John served as Deacon Emeritus and an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, where he attended for almost forty-seven years. John delighted in coaching the First Presbyterian softball team for almost thirty years, leading them to many victories. Since COVID, John found peace at Hayes Barton Baptist Church and became an active, beloved member.
John is survived and missed by Page, his loving wife of 59 years, and his son Carey. He was predeceased by his daughter Jacquelyn, who passed away in 2015 from breast cancer.
The burial service will be a private gathering for immediate family only. We warmly invite friends and extended family to join us for a memorial service at Hayes Barton Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, immediately followed by a brief reception. Your presence and support are deeply appreciated as we honor and celebrate John's life.
