IN THE CARE OF
Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park
John H. Hall, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away quietly on March 13, surrounded by his family. He was 89.
Mr. Hall was born and raised in the Robeson County farming community of McDonald, North Carolina, the son of the late William Black Hall and Alice Ruth Warwick Hall. John completed two years of college at Campbell College, where he played catcher for the baseball team, then transferred to Wake Forest College, earning his bachelor's degree in Biology in 1955. After graduating, John served in the U.S. Navy for two years, aboard the U.S.S. Forrest Royal. He then returned to his beloved North Carolina home and married his sweetheart of 10 years, Mary Bell Baker, shortly thereafter.
After two and a half years as a science teacher and wrestling coach at Grey High School in Winston-Salem, Mr. Hall began working as a pharmaceutical sales representative for the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company, an employer that he would serve loyally for 34 years.
Mr. Hall was not defined by his accomplishments, though they were many, but by his faith and by his devotion to his family and friends. Care for his wife, children, and extended family was always his first priority, followed closely by his caring commitment to his friends and neighbors. He took great joy in time spent with friends in his longtime Raleigh neighborhood of Glen Forest and he tirelessly gave of himself to his St. Giles church community. At St. Giles, he enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in the "Men of the Church" events, and he served multiple terms on the church Session.
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Mary Bell Baker Hall; son, John Hardy Hall, Jr.; daughter, Mary Anna Hall; and twin grandsons, John "Jack" Abbott Horn and Nathan "Nate" Hall Horn.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Ruth Hall Muhler, and his brother, William "Sonny" Arthur Hall.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Stewart Health Center at Springmoor for the care and compassion they showed Mr. Hall in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Mr. Hall's Life on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5101 Oak Park Road, Raleigh. Placement of ashes will immediately follow the service in the St. Giles columbarium.
