John was born and spent his early years in Dixon, Illinois. He attended Northern Illinois University, where he was editor of the literary magazine and active in theater productions. After receiving a master’s degree from the University of Iowa, John held positions teaching literature at several universities.
Later in life, John’s creative interests led him into advertising and public relations work. He created ads for Whirlpool Corporation, and had oversight of advertising and communications at Blount, Inc. and Fujitsu.
John is survived by Sandra Hoffman and their three children, Melissa, Matthew, and Nicole Hoffman, by his sister, Diane Schlesinger, and by three grandchildren, Olivia, Ethan, and Elizabeth Elder.
Visitation will be at Mitchell’s Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, 6:00 – 8:00, March 3. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, March 4 at 11:00.
