John Lowell McKee

John Lowell McKee, 91, passed away Monday, at the Rosewood Health Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Dr. Harley Shultz McKee and Jennie Starks McKee. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Young McKee and his brother Edward Sherman McKee.

John was born and raised in Greensburg, Indiana. After graduating from Purdue University in 1943 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, he was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy, and attended Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for additional training required for his naval assignment. He served three years in the Navy in World War II, mostly with Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons in the Southwest Pacific and achieved the rank of Lt.(jg).

After the war, he began his professional career with the Bell System. Spanning 41 years, he was assigned to various groups within the System, including Illinois Bell, AT&T, Western Electric and Lucent Technologies. He was also a member of the AT&T Pioneers Club.

After working throughout the country, John moved to New York City, where he met Barbara, his wife of 49 years. They married at First Presbyterian Church in NYC, then settled in Summit, New Jersey, then Greensboro, North Carolina and more recently moved to The Cypress of Raleigh in North Carolina.

John is survived by his daughter, Karen McKee Brown and husband Ed of Raleigh; his son, Brian Ross McKee of Plano, Texas; his granddaughters Rachel Brown and Hannon Brown; his niece, Amanda McKee Gillum and husband Bill; his nephew Mark Harley McKee; and grandnieces Jessalyn Gillum and Allison Gillum.

The family would like to thank the Residents and Staff of the Rosewood Health Center and The Cypress of Raleigh, as well as Hospice of Wake County, for their support of John and his family.

Friends are welcome to join the family at the Rosewood Health Center, on Wednesday, January 22nd from 4:30-6:00 pm, to honor John's life. A private family interment and service will follow on Thursday, January 23rd at Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to, Hospice of Wake County, or the charity of one's choice.
