OBITUARY

Jonathan Kim Sjoblad

June 3, 1957January 7, 2019

Jonathan “Jon” Kim Sjoblad, 61, devoted husband of Stephanie J. Sjoblad for over 26 years, went home to his heavenly Father on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Jon was born in Seoul, South Korea and came to the United States in 1960 to join the Sjoblad family. He is the son of the late Roy E. Sjoblad and Elsie Gustavson Sjoblad, both of Boylston, Massachusetts. He leaves behind his wife and his sons, Krister A. Sjoblad and Jonathan “Karsten” Sjoblad, all of Raleigh, North Carolina; his brother Roy Sjoblad and sister-in-law Beverly of Hyattsville, Maryland; his sister Nancy Gill and brother-in-law Rev. Dennis Gill of Wenham, Massachusetts; and his sister Donna O’Driscoll and her partner, Rob Schieni of Northboro, Massachusetts as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jon grew up in Boylston, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Tahanto Regional High School. He attended Gordon College and the University of Massachusetts, and graduated from UMass--Dartmouth with a degree in mechanical engineering. He traveled extensively in the US working as an engineer before settling in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he joined Hipp Engineering and Consulting in 2003. Certified as a Professional Engineer, he served as an I&C Team Leader at Hipp Engineering.

Jon’s family was the center of his life. He loved spending time with his wife and boys traveling, visiting Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, and being physically active, including running half-marathons. He was a committed Christian who was active in his church and volunteered in the Cub Scouts with his sons. A highlight of the past year for Jon was discovering his biological family through Ancestry.com, and connecting with sister Myra Powell and the Hughey family only hours away from his home in Raleigh. These wonderful connections expanded the circle of Jon’s family and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at Southbridge Fellowship in Raleigh. Jon Cullen, executive pastor at Southbridge, will officiate. The family will greet guests at an informal reception following the service.

The family gratefully declines flowers, but prayers, condolences and memories are gladly accepted. Donations may be made in memory of Jon to support Krister and Karsten’s college education fund. Please make checks payable to: Charles Schwab FBO Stephanie Sjoblad Mail the Checks to: Park Ridge Asset Management, Attn: Katie Strother, 8317 Six Forks Road, Suite 203, Raleigh, NC 27615 or to the Southbridge Fellowship Student Ministry, 12621 Strickland Road, Raleigh, NC 27613.

I just learned of my dear Ocean Isle Beach neighbor’s death and greatly saddened for this family. Jonathan was a wonderful, kind, and helping friend and good neighbor whom I will miss greatly.

I am so sad to hear about Jon. He was such a gentle soul with a big heart. Jon and Stephanie were always one of my most favorite couples in Ocean Isle Beach. I helped them find their home on the island and his intent was to have a place for his wife and family to build memories. That he did! My heart goes out to this beautiful family. My prayers are with you all. Jon will be missed.

Jon and I were best friends in high school. We shared many laughs, adventures and poignant moments in Boylston, Massachusetts growing up. I was very quiet, and he helped me express myself in many ways, and I'll always be grateful for his compassionate, loving demeanor that showed me through his actions that many obstacles can be overcome through simply loving others in the best way you know how.

His presence made a great difference in my life, and I'll always be grateful for the special moments we spent together.

With Love,
Barry

I always enjoyed reconnecting with Jon when the family traveled north to Massachusetts. Jon was in my first grade class. He was a quiet presence. He had a great smile and always was genuinely glad to see everyone again. He was so proud of his boys!

Jon would always like to talk to me about/pick my brain on how to improve his sons track times. He always wanted me to help train his boys. I've always told Jon, based on their times and the training advise he is giving his boys they are on the right track to be a successful runners. We never did get together to finalize a training schedule and time. If the boys would like to talk track/running I would be more than happy to do that considering that is something Jon always wanted me to do. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Dear Stephenie,

We were really shocked to hear of the passing of Jon, so young and strong!
May God, our Father, hold you close and comfort you at this trying time and give you and the boys courage and strength.

With our sympathy,

I first met Jon was as a new Cub Scout parent, he was so friendly and kind. Made us feel like we found the right place. The parents and cub scouts were better for knowing him. We will miss him dearly, and remember him fondly. God bless you.

Jon was a wonderful colleague and a genuinely great person to work with. I remember that he was always upbeat, had a smile, and willing to help. I have a lot of respect for Jon as he was one of my references to become a professional engineer and was a person that you made a point to listen to if he had anything to say.

I am sincerely sorry for this unexpected loss. In no way will words mitigate your pain, however I do hope and pray that as time passes your memories grow stronger and the pain of this loss will fade. I have no doubt that Jon is in heaven.

God Bless and God Speed.
