Joe was born in Durham, North Carolina, on July 14, 1941, to Mary Jeannette Ogsbury and Joseph Cheshire Webb. He graduated from Broughton High School in 1959, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He went on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned an A.B. in economics in 1963. Many of his oldest and dearest friends were fellow members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Joe was also a member of the Order of the Old Bean Birds at UNC. After graduation, he served in the Army Medical Corps Reserves and went to live in Hamburg, Germany.
A dear friend said, “A world without Joe Webb is unthinkable—this sadness is overwhelming.” Joe was a character for sure. He had several passions which he loved to share with his family and friends. These included investing, snow skiing, golf, poetry, art, and traveling, and had a great love of listening to live music. His curious nature was one of the things that made him unique and a great friend.
Joe spent his career as an investment advisor, beginning at Reynolds Securities in Durham, where he met his wife, and concluding at Morgan Stanley in Raleigh. He was a lifelong member of Christ Church.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Victoria Jean Ekvall Webb (Vicky); his daughter, Ashley Randolph Webb Andrews, and her husband, Billy, and their children, Eva Janie, Caroline Victoria, and Elizabeth Grace Andrews; and his son, Joseph Cheshire Webb III, and his wife, Ashley, and their children, Victoria Cheshire Webb, Annie Fleming Harris, and Elizabeth Vermillion Harris. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Randolph Webb (Randy), and her husband, Ralph Reynolds, of Raleigh; and his brother, William Ogsbury Webb (Bill), and his wife, Ginny, of Williamston, North Carolina.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Cheshire and Mary Jeannette Ogsbury Webb.
“Pop” treasured his grandchildren and Charlie Brown, his golden retriever.
His interment will take place on Thursday, October 29, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 210 St, Mary's Rd., Hillsborough, NC.
