Judith "Judy" Mintz Abernethy

Judy was born on January 31, 1945 in New Hanover County to the late Linnie Russ and Nicholas Wood Mintz. She graduated King’s College in Charlotte, NC.

She met her husband, life partner and the love of her life, John Abernethy, and was married in 1965. They shared more than 57 happy years of marriage together.

Judy was an active member of the Body of Christ over her life and was part of Catch the Fire Church in Durham, NC. She enjoyed serving in various home groups throughout her life.

Judy was a great woman of faith and was passionate about living with a heart for Jesus, family and others. She was fervent about prayer and seeing an explosion of GOD’S love move through the earth. As a woman of compassion, she would find ways to make a difference in the lives of others. She enjoyed connecting with people she knew and did not know, as well as hosting events and dinners. She was so gifted at making others feel a part of her extended family.

Judy loved to worship and could sing “Waymaker” right along with the old hymns, Gospel songs and beach music, even up to recent weeks. Her love of life was infectious as was her love of her Savior.

Judy’s spunky personality will be sorely missed by her friends, loved ones and especially by John. She surely kept him on his toes.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, and one beloved nephew, Rick Lennon.

She is survived by her husband, John Bloodworth Abernethy; sister Teresa Lennon and husband Dan; sons, Kevin Abernethy and wife Katie; Wesley Abernethy and wife Holly; grandchildren Kenzie, Jenna, Jake, Skylar, Katie and Addie Abernethy; and one great-grandson, River John Schwind.

A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, November 10 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Catch the Fire Church, 2304 Page Rd., Durham, North Carolina 27703.
