

She lived most of her life in Raleigh, graduating from Broughton High School then Hollins College. She enjoyed a very active career in residential real estate and maintained many of the relationships with coworkers and clients after her retirement. She was a fierce competitor on the tennis court and loved all of her tennis buddies, having lunch at Carolina Country Club, and going on shopping trips with close friends.
A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her son Jason Groot (Qinghua), granddaughter Julianna, and grandson Nico. She is also survived by her sister, Sandy Craft (Spalding) of Morehead City, and her brother Floyd E. “Chip” Cohoon of Raleigh, her niece Kipp Price (Tom) of Virginia, and nephew Spalding Craft (Beth) of New Mexico. She was predeceased by both her parents and husband Thomas Cox Powell III.
The family wishes to thank the remarkable team of caregivers, Haddy Gaye, Rakey Manneh, Haddy Ceesay, Awa Mbye, and Trina Daniels, whose dedicated caring and professionalism were an enormous support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 1:30pm at Christ Church, 120 East Edenton Street, Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service.
