OBITUARY

Kitty Holt Atkins Fickes

October 5, 1949November 18, 2021

Kitty Holt Atkins Fickes passed away peacefully on November 18th with her family by her side. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on October 5th, 1949, Kitty was the daughter of the late Leroy Cole Atkins and Mary Holt Drewry. After graduating from Broughton High School in 1967, she received an associate’s degree from Stratford College in 1969 and graduated from Campbell College (now Campbell University) in 1971.

Kitty was a teacher at St. Timothy’s Episcopal School and Hale High School until 1978 and worked for Texas Gulf, Frameworks, Triangle Trigger-Point Therapy, and Arts Together in the years that followed. Her proudest work accomplishment was helping two of her children start and run the family business Humdinger Juice from 2013-2020.

When it came to her children, Kitty always had a front row seat, from filling in as head coach and team manager for soccer, making amazing birthday cakes for family and friends, traveling for basketball, show choir, and “on location” tv and film shoots near and far. In her free time, she enjoyed volunteering with the North Carolina Theatre and Hospice of Wake County (now Transitions LifeCare), and taking trips to St. Maarten with family and friends.

Kitty was preceded in death by her husband, William Tindel Fickes. She is survived by her son, William Crawford Fickes of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Her son Colin Fickes and husband, Daniel Nuñez Daly of New York City. Her daughter Mary Holt Collins and husband, Robert Collins of Raleigh. Granddaughter Camdyn Grace Fickes of Roxboro, North Carolina, and grandchildren Holt Merritt and Hobbs Tindel Collins of Raleigh.

From dance recitals and soccer trips with her granddaughter Camdyn to playing Putt-Putt with her grandchildren Holt and Hobbs at Sunset Beach, Kitty loved her family without a doubt. She believed that family was, and always will be, everything.

A visitation will be Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 4pm to 6pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. A private burial will be held the following day at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to Transitions LifeCare, Philanthropy Dept., 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607, transitionslifecare.org/donate

I have known Mrs. Kitty for many years and she has been a wonderful friend. She was always humble and kind and welcomed me with open arms. We shared many special moments of our lives and families’ lives during our nail appointments that span 30 years +. She was gone too soon and I will never forget little Mrs. Kitty with her chihuahuas and many cold pressed humdingers. Until we meet again ❤️

I have wonderful memories of summers with my parents( Marion and Bob Wynne) next door with her parents Mary Holt and John Atkins at Kerr Lake. Kitty, and her brothers Johnny and Buddy and my brother Bobby and I spent many hours swimming, fishing, and water skiing.
Sending love to the family.

Kitty and I met in 1989 and over all of the years we have known one another she has been so kind, soft-hearted, and such a tender soul, so I know that she is already missing everyone she loves here on earth! And Kitty, we miss and love you too and always will. May God continue to comfort, protect and guide all of your children, grandchildren, friends and family. May His peace that surpasses all understanding, come to overwhelm us all at this time of such sadness and loss. So many wonderful memories remain with our sweet Kitty. I will deeply miss you. Kitty was my PE teacher when I was in the 7th grade at St. Timothy's and all through my high school years at Hale. She was one of the few teachers who cared about her students. I was glad to reconnect with her as an adult. She will be missed. Prayers to her family, William, Colin and Mary Holt.

I know you’re being ushered by heavenly bodies to your new home, I have such a strong feeling you are with your Mother, so joyful and so uncomplicated, sharing lovely stories of your children and the strength and love they showed to the end. Watching over them now and always cause that’s what a mother does.

I will miss your honesty, directness, caring spirit and that wicked sense of humor my dearest friend. Love never dies.

Some of my most wonderful childhood
memories include beautiful Kitty and spending time together with her and her family at Buggs Island(Kerr Lake). I always thought her to be the kindest, warmest, most fun and most stunning girl I knew! As I got a chance to renew my friendship with her as an adult, those memories and traits remained true. She was genuinely one of the good ones and will be missed by many, especially by my mother, Peggy. She was incredibly fond of Kitty and will always have a special place in her heart for her wonderful friend and neighbor. We will never be able to enjoy a fruity colada without thinking of her!
We will miss her dearly.
May your memories sustain you all in times of sadness.

Memories are heavy of all the happy times we got to share together, the Fickes family and I. Through the decades of friendship with Mary, Kitty and I came to share many happy memories as well. I am so grateful for the friendships and memories made that included even sharing time with Kitty and her grandchildren with my children. I will always remember Kitty and that smile and that laugh. Love to all of the family and dear friends of Kitty! XOXO all the hugs and all the kisses
