He was born on December 30, 1959 in Syracuse, New York. He graduated from Faith Heritage High School and obtained his undergraduate B.S. degree at Cornell University and his masters M.S. degree at North Carolina State University in 1984.
Larry was a Customer Care Coordinator/Dispatcher for Siemens Medical Solutions for many years. Larry was a lifelong encyclopedic plantsman, a true horticultural cultivar historian, co-founding the International Coleus Society. He built the first rock garden at the JC Raulston Arboretum before going on to establish the worlds’ most complete collection of Juniperus horizontalis cultivars at the arboretum, for his Masters and PhD work. Larry also created the website, Cultivar.org, covering Woody Plants, Interior Plants, and Hardy Perennials. Interestingly, he was also a published author specializing in western and historical fiction, especially in the 18th and 19th century settings. Larry was a kind man with amazing intellectual rigor, and enjoyed a solitary life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Hope V. Hatch and Clyde F. Hatch.
Larry is survived by his cousins, Brian K. Haynes, Dr. Marc T. Haynes, Dale N. Lake, Diane H. Christianson, and Denise R. Ezrow.
