Leona Winifred Rowe

March 10, 1942February 4, 2020

On February 4, 2020, Leona Winifred (Carter) Rowe entered into eternal peace at home with her daughter in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was a beloved mother, sister, friend, church leader and community steward. Born on March 10, 1942 in Albemarle County, Virginia, she was preceded in death by her parents, former spouse and her son Russell Rowe, who died too soon from brain cancer.

Ms. Rowe was an intelligent, creative and generous woman of God. She accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for several decades. She was the president of the Missionary Society of Pilgrim Baptist Church. In addition, she served faithfully as the church clerk, chairwoman of the Health and Wellness Committee, coordinator of the Elizabeth Project, volunteer at the Vacation Bible School, tutor, mentor, assistant with the Give Away Program, secretary for the Shiloh Association Women’s Division and lifetime member of the Shiloh and the Baptist General Area A.

She graduated from Armstrong High School and worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia, retiring as a certified cancer registrar. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

She was a God-centered, family-loving and community-serving person who walked by faith not by sight. She will be dearly missed by her daughter Lavonda Rowe; son Gathion Rowe, grandson Prince Rowe; granddaughters Chante Rowe and Eleesha Rowe; brother William Carter (Maxine); and countless cousins, relatives and friends.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 8th from 6-8 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC.
