

Skip served in the United States Air Force between 1969 – 1973 with the majority of his service deployed in Germany. He continued his service as a civilian employee working with the NC Army National Guard in Raleigh, NC until his retirement in 2015.
Skip enjoyed sharing his favorite music with family and friends, spending time with his two grandchildren, fishing with his buddies, hunting deer, reading his latest thrillers, and watching sunsets and bird watching at Kerr Lake. His strong love of dogs was witnessed through his passion for rescuing including his two, Cinnamon and Ginger, and spoiling his grand dogs, Canela, Remmington, and Vickery.
Skip is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue Avery Douglas, his children, Leslie Ruth Douglas (Reggie Romero) and Kate “Kato” Douglas Tharp (Chris); his grandchildren, Holden Christopher Tharp and Cameron Jane “CJ” Tharp; his sister, Nancy Douglas Marshall; his niece Misty Lindsey (Sam) and nephew Chad Trout (Jovaughn); his sisters-in-law, Kate Avery Hall (Robert “Bobby”), Mary Jane Avery, Laura Avery Clark, his brother-in-law, Samuel James Avery (Caroline); his beloved dog Ginger, and a large extended family.
Skip is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Marcia Bishop and William “Bill”; his brother-in-law, Ray Marshall; his in-laws, Clifton Kincaid Avery and Ruth Whisenant Avery; his brother-in-law, Bruce Clark; his sister-in-law, Sally Thomas Haney; and his three beloved dogs, Scout, Hunter, and Cinnamon.
A Celebration of Life to be held at Millbrook Methodist Church on 1712 E Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609 at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Saving Grace (animal rescue in Wake County, NC) and/or the Wake Foundation: Honoring Those Who Served (Veteran centered non-profit in Wake County, NC).
