Lin had many accomplishments: at age 13, he was Virginia’s youngest Eagle Scout. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he graduated from Duke University in 1956 with a B.A. in Economics. He went on to serve as a Captain in the US Marine Corps, and had a successful, long career with IBM, retiring after 57 years.
Always ahead of the curve, Lin was the original “early adopter,” fully embracing each new interest with gusto. He was an adventurer: hiking and camping in the mountains, participating in Outward Bound courses, racing motorcycles and cars. He loved a challenge and enjoyed sports like shooting, racquetball, sailing, windsurfing and roller blading. He was a runner for most of his life and enjoyed trail biking as well. As a regular at the gym, he won the pullup contest in his 70’s.
Lin’s great intellect both delighted and frustrated friends and family. He reigned as the clear winner of all debates, and in doing so, he always kept his cool. His logical and respectful nature, tinged with a sense of humor was a unique style all his own. An avid reader, Lin was always reading multiple books at a time and was an enthusiast of all subjects. There are so many things we will miss about Lin, but most of all, we will miss his smile.
Above all, Lin loved his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend, Jacqueline Walker Savage (whom he affectionately called “Slick”), four daughters and one son: Pamela Savage Sturbaum (Chris), Mary Hubbard Lee (Skip), Stuart Warner Hubbard, Elizabeth Anne Baylor, and Corydon Mercer Baylor (Audrey). He was a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren: Ashlin Sturbaum Zarate, Abigail Mae Sturbaum, DVM, Elizabeth Turner, James Turner, Spencer Oakley, Richard Oakley, Meredith Oakley, Alison Baylor Williams, and Wells Baylor, as well as two great grandsons: Augustus Baylor Williams and Peter Constantine Williams. He is preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Laura Savage; his sisters, Virginia Savage Sievers and Charlotte Savage Gray.
A private ceremony will be held at Christ Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the SPCA of Wake County. The family is grateful to Transitions LifeCare for their compassionate care during the last few weeks of his life.
