Louis Lloyd Jacobs, Sr., 82, of Raleigh, NC was born in Queens, NY on June 6, 1938, son of the late Louis Jacobs and Marie Lang Jacobs. His parents moved their family to Westchester County, NY when he was a young child and remained there throughout Lloyd’s early years. He graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1956 and then went on to attend Boston University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. He proudly served as a tank commander in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
After an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain from the Marines in late 1963, Lloyd’s next stop was Madison Avenue in New York City. He worked for advertising giants Young & Rubicon, BBDO, and, after his move to Pittsburgh, Ketchum Communications.
In 1974, Lloyd was recruited by Charles McKinney of McKinney, Silver, & Rockett Advertising (predecessor to the current day McKinney). Lloyd moved his family and joined the agency when it was a small, regional firm and in his business development role, he helped grow it to a national powerhouse. During the course of his career Lloyd also served as a mentor to many young professionals, especially while at McKinney. He retired in 1997 as Vice Chairman.
During his almost 25 years of retirement, Lloyd was able to concentrate on his family and his practice of fine arts. As a prolific artist, his talent was showcased in his many oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and historically-accurate miniature military figurines. His obsession with military history and strategy inspired his passion for replicating military uniforms on each figurine. He was a founding member of the Fraternity of North American Military Artists and was a member of the Napoleonic Society of America and The Association of World War I Aviation Historians.
Lloyd’s legacy will live on through his beloved wife of over 60 years, Jean (who was also his high school sweetheart), his son Lloyd Jr. (Maggie) of Raleigh, son Tom (wife Michelle) of Raleigh and his four grandchildren, Lauren, Ansley, Louis, and Anthony. When Lloyd spent time with his grandkids, he was the biggest kid of them all! Lloyd is also survived by his younger brother Bruce (wife Ingrid) of Savannah, GA and his family. Lloyd’s family is surrounded by his beautiful paintings, military figurines, and their hearts are imprinted with his boisterous laugh, his intensity and zest for life.
A private ceremony will be held to honor and celebrate the life of Louis Lloyd Jacobs Sr.
Lloyd’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to his wonderful physicians at Duke University Medical Center. They successfully treated him and helped him defeat cancer six times over the course of 27 years: the late Dr. Richard McCann, the late Dr. Walter Wolfe, Dr. Jeffrey Crawford, and Dr. Joseph Govert.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Duke Cancer Institute Fund.
