

She was born October 22, 1923 in the Lane’s Chapel community of Dover, NC to the late Augustus Tilghman and the late Sue Mae Hill Tilghman.
Lucille graduated from Fort Barnwell High School, as President of the Class of 1940. She relocated to Raleigh, NC in 1941 to attend King’s Business College, where she graduated in October 1942.
Lucille went on to work for Nationwide Insurance Company in Raleigh for 15 years, before relocating to the Columbus, OH headquarters. She was an Executive Secretary for 20+ years before spending her last years at Nationwide as a Controls Analyst. While working for Nationwide she was recognized many times for her dedication and expertise. Lucille represented her company at the Global Secretaries Conference in Washington D.C. in 1961. She became a Certified Professional Secretary in 1963, and was the sixth woman in the company to achieve this status. Lucille was a lifelong member of Professional Secretaries International. After 41 years of dedicated service, she retired in 1985.
In Columbus, she lived in Upper Arlington and Marble Cliff. She delighted in hosting friends at her home for dinner parties and bridge luncheons. She loved going out to her favorite restaurants, including the Cambridge Tea House, Columbus Fish Market, The Old Bag of Nails Pub, Bob Evans and Bonefish Grill.
Lucille was a member and dedicated volunteer of Trinity United Methodist Church. She ushered for the Columbus Symphony and Opera. She was an avid reader and bridge player, enjoyed traveling with friends and family, and cheering on the Ohio State University Buckeyes. Lucille loved knitting, and every year made hand knit dishcloths to gift to loved ones and donate to the Lane’s Chapel United Methodist Church annual bazaar.
Beginning in 2015, Lucille spent several winters in NJ with her niece, Linda. While there she enjoyed shopping, weekly dinners at the local Bonefish Grill and holiday trips to NC.
In 2019, she returned to Raleigh, residing at Springmoor Retirement Community where she made friends quickly and enjoyed lots of coffee ice cream. She and her family are grateful for all the support and care shown to her by the Springmoor community and the Stuart Health Center staff.
In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her twin sister, Louise Tilghman Floyd, of Raleigh, NC, in 2006, and her brother Billy W. Hill, of Dover, NC, in 1992. She is survived by her niece, Linda S. Floyd, of Basking Ridge, NJ, her nephew Robert (Bob) M. Floyd Jr. of Raleigh, NC, his wife Sandy, and their daughters Jennifer and Kathryn Floyd also of Raleigh.
Funeral services and burial will be private. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
