A message from the family:
Paying it Forward. A eulogy for My Daughter, Lucy Hammer.
The past months have been difficult for Lucy and our family.
When we learned of the diagnosis, metastatic colorectal cancer. We cried.
Lucy was a rock! She said “Oh well” and smiled.
We asked the Lord for help. Many of you also asked “what can we do?”
The response: Pray Lucy’s pain is relieved and the tumor is treatable.
We all prayed for Lucy. She was happy, joking with family and friends.
Her path was hard, but she was her joyous and lovable self.
She called over the IWatch walkie talkie app.
Dad, I need help.
Dad, Can mom lay with me?
Our prayers were redoubled. Lucy died peacefully at home with her mother.
Her death makes me want to tell her story. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a silent killer. It can be cured if detected early. It is increasing in young adults and is usually advanced when detected.
The symptoms:
Diarrhea/ Constipation/ bloating/ excessive gas
A change in bowel movements -frequency or consistency
These are quite nonspecific symptoms and may go unnoticed. As important as recognizing these symptoms, the risk factors are genetic (familial), obesity, inactivity. Familial risk means if your parent, grandparent, aunts or uncles have had anything removed during a colonoscopy your risk is increased.
Ask your relatives if during their colonoscopy they had anything removed?. If one or more say yes, talk to your doctor and get a colonoscopy as a young adult. Don’t take no as an answer. Your health is your responsibility.
The Lord is with us all the time.
He will comfort us and gives us the strength to face these most difficult times.
He carries us through these dark times.
Peace is in knowing Lucy is with Our Lord, God the Creator.
May the Peace which passes understanding be with us all.
