

Margaret Cox Wooten Fleming died Friday, October 5, 2012, at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born in Raleigh on July 6, 1919, to Xennie Wilder Cox and William Arthur Cox.
Her son, Bert Hughston Wooten, III; and her husband, Wilton Lee Fleming, Sr.; and five brothers, predeceased her.
She is survived by her daughter, Melba Corinne Wooten Hanson, and three grandchildren, Robert Kent Wooten, Russell Brenning Hanson, and Caroline Corinne Hanson Bradley. She is also survived by one brother, Belvin Cox of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and one sister, Melba Cox Sinclair of Colfax, N.C.; and three step-sons, Lee, Roy, and Walter Fleming.
After attending Louisburg College, she graduated from Greensboro College in 1943. In 1959, she received her Masters of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She had a long, distinguished career, touching thousands of students’ lives, teaching English and Theater Arts at Cary High School, Hugh Morson High School, and then Broughton High School, until she retired in 1981.
During her teaching career, she studied at both the University of Durham and the University of Southampton in England, and led several high school study groups on tours of England and various ports of call around the Mediterranean Sea. In 1981, she was inducted into the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an organization of professional educators. She served as president of her chapter for a term, and was a member for the remainder of her life.
She married Wilton Fleming, Sr., of Raleigh, in 1981. Together they enjoyed an active life and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. They moved to Springmoor in 1999 where they participated in many activities.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund, The Springmoor Library, Greystone Baptist Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
A memorial service celebrating Margaret’s life will be held in the Springmoor Auditorium, Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at 2:00 PM, following a graveside service at 11:00 AM at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Arrangements are being handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh.
