Marion received her bachelor’s degree in history from Women's College in Greensboro and her Masters in Library Science from UNC-CH. Her early career in Library Science included working in the NYC library system and libraries in Lee and Stanly counties. The majority of her career was spent with the State Library in the Department of Cultural Resources in Raleigh where she rose to the position of Director of Library Development for Rural Areas.
Marion thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years as she turned her attention to travel and the cultural arts. Her frequent and favorite travel destinations were the United Kingdom, Europe and Russia. During her free time, Marion was an avid correspondent and an active member of the NC Friends of the Library.
Marion was predeceased by her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and siblings, Jane Minard and William Paul (Bud) Middleton. She is survived by her children: daughter, Janie J. DeMario, Janie’s husband Joseph, and son, James A. Johnson and by her beloved cat, Minnie.
The family would like to especially thank her health care aides, Wilter Ndubi, Naomi Mogaka and Rachel Mogire who helped Marion during this difficult period.
