Marion Smith Rand

Marion Smith Rand, 98, died as graciously as she lived on October 31, 2016. Born to Eliza and Sidney F. Smith in Cary, NC, Marion attended Mary Washington College (now Univ. of Mary Washington) after which she met her future husband, Kenneth T. Rand. Together they raised four children in Raleigh. She also began a 50-year career starting at Durham Life Insurance Co., continuing as the administrative member for the team designing Dorton Arena and Harrelson Hall at NCSU, and ending with the Materials Science & Engineering Dept. at NCSU. After retiring, she traveled, spent time with her family and volunteered.

Marion considered her four children to be her greatest accomplishment. She was predeceased by her husband, Ken and her brother, Sidney E. Smith. She is survived by her sister, Grace S. Nowell of Raleigh and her four children: Linda R. Caviness (Tim) of Williamsburg, VA; Kenneth T. Rand, jr. of Raleigh; Patricia R. Chamberlain of Raleigh; and Martha R. Boyle (Doug) of Chapel Hill as well as 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Refreshments and a Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am Friday, November 4, 2016 at Fairmont United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 2501 Clark Avenue Raleigh, NC 27607, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 am Friday at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the National Parkinson’s Association.
