Martha Lawrence Lindsey Gould, age 87, passed away peacefully at Mayview Convalescent Center on December 3rd. She was born and raised in Chesapeake, Va. and later attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC where she met the love of her life, John Thomas (Tom) Gould. They were soon married and settled in Raleigh where they raised their family and lived the rest of their lives.
Martha was kept busy much of her life being a loving wife, homemaker and mother to their five children. However, she somehow found time to fit in things she enjoyed like cheering-on NC State, doing shopping from her never ending supply of mail order catalogs, and doing a little surf fishing during the family's vacations. Martha also dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and remained His devoted student and faithful servant during the second half of her life. The many people who got to know her through her volunteer work at Rex Hospital and with the Senior's Club at Jenkins Memorial United Methodist Church will always remember Martha's bright blue eyes, brilliant smile, quiet manner and deep love of Jesus. Her gentle personality, strong faith, scholarly study of the Bible and practice of its teachings brought the gift of Jesus Christ's love to her family and all who knew her. Many peoples' lives were changed by Martha's steadfast prayers, unfailing love and generous heart.
Tom preceded Martha, his “Puggy,” in death in 1996. Both will be forever remembered and missed by their four sons and daughter: John Thomas (Tom) Gould, Jr.and wife Linda, Lindsey M. Gould and wife Phyllis, Lawrence W. Gould, all of Raleigh, NC; Nancy C. Gould and husband Barry Carlton of Winston-Salem, NC; and James C. Gould and wife Julie of Columbia, SC. Martha is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Mayview Convalescent Home who gave Martha loving care during her four years with them and to the staff of Hospice of Raleigh for their recent assistance and support to both Martha and her children.
Friends will be welcomed by the family for visitation on Monday, December 6 from 7-9pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612. The funeral service will also be held there on Tuesday, December 7 at 2pm. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 6612 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, N.C. 27613.
