She was born on May 13, 1950, in Durham, the first child of the late Robert E. and Alice G. (Ryland) Giles. Martha graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington DC, and received a BA in English from North Carolina State University.
Martha was an avid reader of novels and poetry. She also wrote poems and occasionally presented her work at amateur poetry jams. Martha gave her life to her Lord and received peace and solace from reading her Bible. For most of her life, Martha suffered from the debilitating effects of mental illness.
She is survived by Harold Tyndall, Ashley (Tyndall) Sherman, and Matthew Tyndall, and siblings David Giles, Lewis Giles, and Nancy Giles.
A remembrance and burial service will be private for family and close friends.
In recent years, Martha received dedicated care from a group home (Destiny Family Care) in Raleigh. Her family is thankful for all the great doctors and health care workers at UNC and WakeMed Hospitals who provided care for Martha.
