OBITUARY

Mary Carolyn Ahlert

November 9, 1938 – August 4, 2026
Obituary of Mary Carolyn Ahlert
IN THE CARE OF

Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park

Mary Carolyn Ahlert, 87, passed away in the comfort of her home on August 4, 2026 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on November 9, 1938 in Jefferson City, Missouri; she was the daughter of the late William G. Avery and Jane McBee Avery.

Growing up Mary was active in Girl Scouts and often shared fond memories of her summers as a camp counselor.

She loved to tell the story of meeting her future husband for a blind date in her bedroom as she was preparing to attend school at Lindenwood Women's College. That first date blossomed into a three year long-distance courtship that would lead to her marriage to Bob.

Her husband's career took the family to five different states and Mexico City. She especially enjoyed reminiscing about accompanying her husband on a business trip to China and living in Mexico City. Upon retirement, they made their home in Clayton, North Carolina for 27 years before moving to Raleigh.

Mary was an accomplished cook. She was a devoted stay-at-home mother who cherished raising her two children and later delighted in supporting and encouraging her three grandsons. In retirement, she enjoyed cards with friends and playing golf.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years: Robert J. Ahlert, their two children: Robert Ahlert and Sue Schaefer (Dan), her grandsons: John Schaefer (Rachel), Rob Schaefer (Jackie Walejko) and Mike Schaefer (Elana Kaplan), and her great-grandsons: Milo and Simon Schaefer.

Services will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or St. Baldrick's Foundation.
