Mary Maxine Hyman Smith, 95, of Roxboro, NC, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Maxine was born February 10, 1931, in Oak City, NC. She was the daughter of Frances Council Hyman and Murray Eugene Hyman.
She graduated from Oak City High School in 1949 and continued her education at Park View Hospital, earning a diploma in Surgical, Medical, and Obstetrical Nursing in 1952. As a Registered Nurse, Maxine devoted her career to caring for others, first at Rex Hospital in Raleigh and later as the company nurse for Collins & Aikman. Maxine and her future husband, Jack Smith, Jr., were childhood friends.
After living in Atlanta, Georgia, and Adairville, Kentucky, they made their home in Roxboro, where they raised their two daughters, Elisabeth and Deanna.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Jack Smith, Jr.; her brothers Eugene Hyman, Nathan Council Hyman, and Wallace Hyman; her sister Kaye Hyman Buffaloe; and her son-in-law Haden Lane.
She is survived by her daughters Elisabeth Lane of Raleigh, NC and Deanna Sibbald of Alexandria, VA; son-in-law Paul Sibbald; grandchildren Peter Lane and Jack Sibbald; her brother Wayne and sister-in-law Millie Hyman of Brevard, NC; sisters-in-law Lesley Hyman of Cary, NC, Dorothy Whitehead of Scotland Neck, NC, and Inez Emanuel of Greenville, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 3rd at 2:00pm at Oak City Baptist Church, Oak City, NC. Burial will follow at Oak City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm at the church prior to the service.
