Mary Smith died peacefully on November 23, 2018 in Raleigh at the Stewart Health Center at Springmoor after living four good years with ovarian cancer. She was born in Akron, Ohio to Louis A. Hurley and Pearl Welfley Hurley and raised in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Following graduation from Cuyahoga Falls High School Mary attended Bowling Green State University before graduating from Ohio University with a degree in Medical Technology. She met Daniel Wilson Smith at OU, and after they were married in Akron in 1952 she joined him in Cleveland where she worked at Lutheran Hospital. From 1957 to 1970, Mary, Dan and their children lived in Lakewood, Ohio before moving to Bethesda, MD. In 2006 Mary and Dan moved to Springmoor in Raleigh.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother Richard L. Hurley.
She is survived by her son Neil Smith of Ijamsville, MD, her daughter Elaine Cooke and her husband John Cooke of Raleigh, her grandsons Ryan Cooke (Mary Katherine) of Greensboro, NC and Jason Cooke of Washington, DC, and a niece Martha Hurley Cailor of Hudson, OH.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on December 2, 2018 in the auditorium at Springmoor, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. An inurnment service will be held at a later date at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD.
