

She was born in Wilson, on Oct. 7, 1921 to Greek immigrants, John Nackos and Eva Mischou Nackos. She married George Yionoulis in 1955 and they had two children. George, an interior designer, passed away in 1999.
An accomplished technical writer, Mary was head of publications and information for the School of Engineering at N.C. State University where for more than 30 years she wrote articles, published brochures, and promoted the achievements of professors and students. Prior to that, she helmed her own daily radio program, “Moments with Mary,” at Wilson’s WGTM and taught at Atlantic Christian College. Mary was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After her retirement from N.C. State, she was active on the Thompson Theatre Endowment Board and with the American Dance Festival.
She is survived by her brother, Charles Nackos, of Vienna, Va.; daughter, Evan Holder and husband, Donald, of Croton on Hudson, N.Y., and their children, Sarah and Josh; and her son, Mike, his wife, Lisa Jolley, and their son, George.
A visitation will be held Sunday from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College St. NE., Wilson.
